Why Polyphenols Matter in Extra Virgin Olive Oil

What Are Polyphenols and Why Do They Matter?

Polyphenols are plant-based antioxidant compounds that help protect the body from oxidative stress and inflammation, both key factors in the development of chronic disease.
In extra virgin olive oil, these include:

  • Hydroxytyrosol
  • Oleuropein
  • Oleocanthal (known for its natural anti-inflammatory effects, similar to ibuprofen)

Together, they support heart health, brain function, immune defence, and metabolic balance.
Scientific studies have linked a high-polyphenol olive oil diet to:

  • Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes
  • Lowered inflammatory markers
  • Slower cognitive decline
  • Improved lipid profiles and blood vessel elasticity

WHAT DOES HIGH IN POLYPHENOLS REALLY MEAN

Olive oils can differ widely in their composition and nutritional value. For an extra virgin olive oil to officially be classified as “high in polyphenols” under European regulations (EU Regulation 432/2012), it must contain at least 250 mg/kg of polyphenols. Additionally, in order to make a health claim on packaging, the oil must also provide at least 5mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g serving.

Why Our Oils Are Different

At Tenute Cristiano, we don’t just craft extra virgin olive oil we cultivate a powerful, naturally in the pursuit of wellness. Our extra virgin oils are cold-extracted from early-harvested olives, a process that preserves their vibrant aroma and unlocks their highest nutritional potential.

Tested, Traced, and Trusted

All of our extra virgin olive oils have consistently a high level of polyphenols with results, at harvest, typically ranging between 400 and 650 mg/kg, depending on the year and variety. Each batch is subject to microbiological, chemical, and organoleptic analysis, carried out by third-party laboratories officially recognised by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (G.U. n. 261 – 08/11/2016 | D.M. 19/10/2016).
Because polyphenols naturally decline over time, starting from such elevated levels means our oils retain their health benefits, stability, and taste integrity for longer. .
